After being jetlagged and getting up to go to the gym at 6am, you’d think Josephine and Anthony of Oh Wonder would be exhausted as they arrived at Paste Studio in the late afternoon. Nope. They were as upbeat and peppy as ever. In fact, I don’t think I’ve ever seen either of them in anything but a happy mood! Their new record “No One Else Can Wear Your Crown” has since been announced but on that Tuesday afternoon, Oh Wonder debuted a couple of new songs from that still unreleased record.
The session kicked off with a “Better Now” (released last month), a song they wrote about the birth of their cousin’s baby girl who wasn’t breathing at first and it was touch and go for a bit. They felt they couldn’t do anything to help so they did what they do best, which is write a song. Then they talked about how they started as a band: wanting to write for other bands, dropping music on Soundcloud, and blowing up unexpectedly. Definitely a great story for aspiring musicians. They continued with two songs they wrote for exes. The first “I Wish I Never Met You” was Josephine’s “fuck you” anthem to previous boyfriends who had cheated on her. The second “Happy” was Anthony’s message to his previous girlfriend who had gotten married and is a happy song because, as Josephine said, “he’s such a nice guy and doesn’t have a mean bone in his body”.
Oh Wonder will be on tour and back in New York on April 7th, 2020 at King’s Theatre in Brooklyn. You can pre-order “No One Else Can Wear Your Crown” here.
