Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr…what more is there to say, right? But what did I know about them before this show? Only the songs I knew from playing the video game Rock Band! Of course I had heard of these bands but didn’t know the music very well. But what the hell…each concert is a brand new experience.
I brought my daughter with me and we were at the barricade, slightly to the right…where Thurston normally stands. Cold Cave opened. We were not fans and quickly forgot their music. Dinosaur Jr came on next and were great…and LOUD! This was the first show where I wish I had ear plugs. I always thought they were for the old folk who couldn’t stand loud music. But I never knew loud until this show. I was also regularly distracted by the woman standing behind me who kept trying to get the attention of bassist, Lou Barlow. All I heard was something about Gold Toe socks. Would have been nice if she stopped using my shoulders as leverage to climb over.
Sonic Youth was amazing! The energy, the noise, the guitar playing! They didn’t play Teenage Riot but the rest of the set was a good mix of old stuff and songs from their latest CD “The Eternal”. At one point during Silver Rocket, Thurston Moore was going nuts unleashing feedback by pressing his guitar against speakers and his mic. As he charged towards the edge of the stage, the mic almost nailed us!! Good times!
