As a huge Yeah Yeah Yeah’s fan as well as being a fan of some of Danger Mouse’s previous collaborations, I was extremely excited to not only hear the record “Lux Prima” when it first came out in March but to see the interpretation of that record on stage. When they announced two small “Lux Prima” shows in LA and just one in NYC, I knew I had to be there. I definitely wasn’t the only one. I met fans that came as far away as Toronto and Denver!
Lux Prima itself is a pretty amazing record. When I first started listening to it, the first three hit me as a collaboration between Pink Floyd and Roxy Music. Then “Woman” came on and, yep, there were the Yeah Yeah Yeahs! If you haven’t had a listen yet, you absolutely need to.
The show opened uneventfully with Andrew Savage from Parquet Courts grabbing a seat on stage with his guitar. It wasn’t surprising that Savage would be opening since Danger Mouse had previously produced their 2018 record “Wide Awake!”. The deprecating Savage, however, indicated that Karen O and Danger Mouse had offered the opening just the night before while he was playing in the NYC subways!! Funny guy.

Danger Mouse, the band, and a string section entered the stage and began the initial instrumental of Lux Prima. As the crowd waited with bated breath, Karen O slowly walked out to raucous cheers. The mood was immediately lightened when Karen missed the cue for the first line and had to start over again. She had the biggest smile on her face as “No eyes open, no eyes closed” washed over the crowd. Besides one more missed start during “Woman”, the show was enthralling, albeit a bit short since they played only songs from the record. Nevertheless, we were all happy to have been the lucky few to see Lux Prima performed live.
