Alex Lahey is definitely doing it right – Aug 23, 2019

1I6A3161-1Friday nights in New York City are meant for partying but, as Alex Lahey says on the first track of her latest LP, “I Don’t Get Invited to Parties Anymore”.  This Melbourne based singer/songwriter has been coming up with witty and very straightforward lyrics since she first entered our collective consciousness with “You Don’t Think You Like People Like Me” in 2016.  Her recent album “The Best of Luck Club” was released in May of this year and she is the midst of the US leg of her tour in support of the record after stops in the UK and home in Australia.

The opening act was Florida rocker Kinsbury (Caroline Kingsbury). She was definitely high energy with a dry sense of humor although the crowd wasn’t very responsive.  Dressed in a cocktail dress and white cowboy boots and hat, it was her voice that was the star.  It’s hard to believe that this amazing singer is not signed.  Hey record labels, get your move on!!

I missed Alex Lahey when she performed at Bowery Ballroom last year but I wasn’t going to miss the show last night. The last time I saw her was an acoustic show at Rough Trade in 2017. This one proved to be a very different experience. First, it seemed like every Aussie in NYC was here. They were loud and ready to go from the start.  And this was definitely a rock show with searing guitar solos and even a mosh pit!!  Lahey played a good mix of songs from the new record and from her first, finishing with an encore of “I  Love You Like a Brother”.
