Growing up in the 90s saw the emergence of alternative rock and grunge. But if you were into female singer/songwriters, artists such as FIona Apple, Norah Jones, Dido, and Alanis Morissette also hit the spotlight. As part of that list of amazing songwriters, Sarah McLachlan not only gave us multi-platinum albums “Fumbling Towards Ecstasy” and “Surfacing” but also co-founded the Lilith Fair festival which featured all women artists. McLachlan returned to Forest Hills Stadium in NYC with an “intimate evening” of song featuring the New York Pops.
The evening kicked off with three big hits: “Possession”, “I Will Remember You” and “Adia”. In between songs, McLachlan told stories about how the songs came about or the period in her life. While many stories often revolved around love lost or her divorce, she managed to put a lighthearted and self-deprecating spin on everything, evoking laughter at every turn. At one point, she was dancing onstage during “Loving You is Easy”, something I never thought I’s see at a Sarah McLachlan concert!
During her finale, McLachlan hit some unbelievably high notes with “Fear” from “Fumbling Towards Ecstasy”. She closed off the night with “Angel”, one of the top songs of 1998. While some may call her music all sad and depressing, Sarah McLachlan can definitely still sing. Her beautiful voice and witty banter definitely didn’t leave her fans sad as they went home after this incredible show.
