Sunflower Bean and Sleigh Bells rock Brooklyn Steel – Feb 13, 2018

1I6A4483You know that feeling when the local band you’ve been following starts to make it and you’re torn because, on the one hand, you want them to succeed and hit it big but, on the other hand, you want to continue to see them in cozy venues?  Well, I have that feeling with both these bands.

Sleigh Bells formed 10 years ago in Brooklyn with vocalist Alexis Krauss and guitarist Derek Miller.  They’re still going strong and released an EP “Kid Kruschev” in late 2017.  While their latest is strong, albeit more mellow than previous releases, you have to see Sleigh Bells live to get the full experience.

The opening band, Sunflower Bean, is also well known to locals.  They formed in 2013 with guitarist Nick Kivlen and bassist Julia Cumming sharing lead vocalist duties.  Drummer Jacob Faber rounded out the trio.  On their recent release “Twenty Two in Blue”, Cumming has taken more of a lead role and has really emerged as a rock star, showing more confidence on stage as well as with her vocals.  This band is really going places and I expect we won’t be able to see them in those DIY venues anymore.

Sleigh Bells then entered the stage to bright flashing strobes. The constant blinking lights would be a consistent them to the night, in sync with the intensity of the band.  The energy that Krauss brings to the stage is incredible and must keep her extremely fit…and why not since does rock climbing in her spare time.  In addition, Krauss also released a song “Our Land” in support of Bears Ears National Monument, to raise awareness of the attack of the current administration on our national parks.  She’s definitely keeping busy.
